So apparently inserting yourself into a story or fanfiction, directly or indirectly means it's a Mary-Sue.

It actually doesn't.

I think self-inserts are OK as long as you don't do something to the character to make him/her/you over-powerful.

And for the record, self-insert pairings are OK as long as you don't overdo it and understand the fictional character doesn't exist.

Let's see how many Author Avatars we have - or at least I know: The Picture of Dorian Gray trio, Benjamin from Animal Farm, a Butterfly from The Last Unicorn, Luke Skywalker...

And you know, you really gives a shit if a character is an author avatar? It doesn't affect the story if it's done right.

Hermione Granger is J. K. Rowling's own self-insert who's not a sue.

Also, Rick Riordan averts this with Percy Jackson. But unfortunately played straight with Jason Grace in Heroes of Olympus.

Wow, this is really true.
Lot's of people believe that because most the time they ARE sue inserts.
It's not a Mary-Sue unless they put them selves in the position, that's their choice.

Whell i am defnitivly plan on puting my self in my story in a cameo just for the fun of it :)
and if we all dig deep almost every fan/original character can be consider a bit of a self insert sinse we all artist tend to add sometimes uninentualy some of our traits into our created character

I think a good self insert is a five second cameo, like what some directors (Such as Hitchcock) did. Some Disney animation directors did a similar thing, doing a self insert where you're just a background character with one or two lines. Cameos are fun. :lol:
