Stamp: OC does not always mean Mary-Sue by Catthylove Stamp: OC does not always mean Mary-Sue by Catthylove
Apparently bending the story in fanfiction and pairing your OC with a cannon character means Mary-Sue. It doesn't.

The definition of a Mary-Sue according to wikipedia:

"A Mary Sue (sometimes just Sue), in literary criticism and particularly in fan fiction, is a fictional character with overly idealized and hackneyed mannerisms, lacking noteworthy flaws, and primarily functioning as a wish-fulfillment fantasy for the author or reader. It is generally accepted as a character whose positive aspects overwhelm their other traits until they become one-dimensional. While the label "Mary Sue" itself originates from a parody of this type of character, most characters labelled "Mary Sues" by readers are not intended by authors as such. Male Mary Sues are often dubbed "Gary Stu", "Larry Stu", "Marty Stu", or similar names."

Yeah, OCs CAN be Mary-Sues, but that doesn't always MEAN IT'S A MARY-SUE.

Mary sues no longer have a stable meaning. People just butcher that word and throw it off towards female characters who deemed the word.

I was always afraid my OCs would be called Mary Sues since I created a whole story and race about them... If theres truly people who actually do that then that makes me nervous about one of my dreams.....

Woah woah woah, there are people who automatically assume all OCs are Mary Sues? That's the ultimate stupid. Facepalm

None of my characters are Mary sues, they all make mistakes and have their imperfections just like RL people. I hate how in the mlp fandom, some people go like Mary Sue automatically when someone makes an alicorn, as if all are Mary sues. Nowadays, it seems like the term "Mary Sue" is an affront  that jerks use in order to attack creators who make a character they do not like.

I don't understand how having a lot of colors and accessories on your character is bad. It's their character, let them do what they want!

Pretty much how lots of people view Bella from Twilight, I tested her, the result? Meyer should've burned Bella and started over.

I've never understood why people hate OCxcanon pairings. I think the main problem is when the story focuses too much around the OC; they are meant more as a supplement to the story rather than someone for the story to revolve around. My OC's will have a background and everything (unless they're cameos or something) but I generally stop at two or three. I once had this story that was going nowhere and overrun by OC's, with the canon characters almost like secondary characters. I didn't really like it so I stopped for a while. I got a lot of messages asking me when I was going to take it off hiatus (it was actually sort of popular; don't ask me why) but I used my author veto power to take it down. There are some artists here whose OC's I really like...and am almost jealous of, lol!

First off, YAY STARSCREAM XD
Second, I'm one of those people that don't really like CanonXOC pairings (no I don't despise them or anything, but some are not done well) IDK why but it just feels strange, seeing a canon character with a stranger. BUT, BUT I have seen very well done where its not, Oh, you didn't know? He got a sparkmate 200 years after the war. No we're starting the story after he's had like 6 sparklings. Yea. And you are going to love every one of them!
No. But if you give me a story, let me see how the two get closer, I WILL accept it.

I do have a story, "The Mech Code", where Skywarp starts dating a Seeker medic, Moonbeam. But even though he loves her and she's exceptionally beautiful (and a good medic) Moonbeam is actually a catty gold-digger, not to mention a slut-shamer. The point of the story is that Thundercracker is in love with Moonbeam also, and Starscream hates her (canonically, in G1, I've noticed Starscream doesn't get along too well with girls), so Moonbeam threatens to split up the Trine. There's a MegatronxStarscream thing as a subplot, but it's called "The Mech Code" because it's a play on "The Guy Code", which states that you should never let a girl get in between friendships with other guys. But...is that what Skywarp's DOING?

I hope so! "The Mech Code" is actually part of a trilogy. The first is "Unstable Energon" (which is on Deviant Art), the second is "The Mech Code" (obviously, also on DA) and the third is "Your Family Loves You Anyway", which is only on ff.net. If it gets more popular I could bring it here. (on fanfiction I'm metallicgirl42)

I realized something. Oc's with a lot of effort put into them, and have a lot of them in them, they get barely any praise. Only one or two comments. However, when someone makes in oc is what, five seconds? They get TONS AND TONS of praise.

If one makes an OC though why not make another OC your taking someone else's work and writing, sure fanfictions are fun but eventually I think it would be good to venture out and do your own stuff.

If you don't want a character to be one, just give them a flaw! Simple as that!

flaws can be
"social awkwardness"
and that could make them more "kawaii" because they "blush a lot" in public

Well, no, not really. It's pretty complicated as far as I see it. What kind of flaws should she have? For example, I see my OWN clumsiness as a huge flaw (this Christmas, I broke THREE ornaments, one of them was one my sister got us on her trip to Ireland :( ), but for example in Twilight, Bella's clumsiness isn't a flaw because Edward apparently likes it. (I know it's not an original example, but it's the first one that came to mind. Not that I read Twilight, I just hear stuff about it.) Giving someone a flaw (allergy, obsession with something weird, etc.) doesn't really count if it doesn't get in the way of their lives. My best OC, Thomas Price (from original fiction by me) was, I think, a developed character. Thomas has his strengths (loyalty, a good soldier, a good fighter, respect for authority, follows rules, brave) but he has his flaws too (can't keep his alcohol down, sort of a crybaby, can't talk to girls, issues with personal hygiene, and he's reluctant to try things that are against the rules). At one point he did sneak out to see his girlfriend at night, but he got caught and severely punished for it. Anti-Sues are as annoying as Mary Sues because while being perfect and all isn't realistic, neither is having no strengths in an obvious effort by the author to avoid the creation of a Mary Sue.

I know how it feels,  i've had multiple people accuse my characters of being 'Mary Sues'  because they have supernatural powers,  but the thing is my characters actually do have flaws and things that limit them from becoming too overpowered,   they have personalities of their own and technically aren't part of any fandom - so in a way none of my characters are 'Mary Sues' in any sense.
